FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Children can start learning the violin at any age. For the youngest (from around age 4), violins come in sizes from 1/16 or 1/8 that grow with the child. Lessons for little ones focus on playing with sound, rhythm, and building a relationship with the instrument. Older children can progress more quickly to reading music and technique. Regardless of age, every lesson is tailored to the child's sensitivity and abilities, with a patient approach and no rushing.
More about violin lessons for children →Yes, violin lessons are available in both Polish and English. Gabriela Higson-Spence is fluent in both languages, making lessons accessible to Polish families as well as international families living in Kraków. The language of instruction is agreed individually — it's also possible to mix both languages if the child is bilingual.
Lessons take place in person in Kraków, in Ruczaj in the Dębniki district. I teach children and teenagers only, individually, one to one. I share the exact address when we arrange the first lesson.
Simply fill out the contact form on this page or call 503 470 930. I will get in touch to discuss your child's experience and expectations, match the right level, and arrange the first lesson. The first meeting is also a chance for your child to get to know the instrument and see if they enjoy it.
You don't need to buy a violin to start — at the first lesson we'll determine the right instrument size and I'll help you choose the best option. For children, I recommend renting a violin from a music school or music shop, as the instrument needs to change as the child grows. I'll advise on sizing (from 1/16 to 4/4) and suggest trusted places in Kraków.
Violin size chart for children →The first lesson is a relaxed meeting where the child gets to know the violin — touching the instrument, trying to hold the bow, and producing their first sounds. I also observe how the child responds to music, which helps me set the pace for future lessons. Parents are welcome to stay, especially with younger children. There's no stress or pressure — the goal is to spark curiosity and joy in music.
For most students, one lesson per week is optimal. Regularity is key — consistent lessons allow habits to form and skills to build gradually. Between lessons, daily practice at home is important, even just 10–15 minutes a day for the youngest students. I give parents guidance on how to support their child's home practice.
Private lessons offer full flexibility — the program is tailored entirely to your child, without a rigid curriculum or exams. The pace of learning depends on the student's abilities and interests. Music school also teaches ear training and music theory, which is valuable but requires a larger time commitment. Many of my students combine private lessons with music school, or start with me and later transition to school with a solid foundation.
Yes, I organize recitals and concerts for students, which are an important part of learning. Playing in front of an audience builds confidence and teaches how to manage stage fright. Many of my students also perform with the Little Army of Janosik ensemble, giving them additional stage experience and the chance to play in a group.
